“On Golf”

Wells, Ronald | The Reformed Journal, September 1986

p. 6

Quotes British journalist Alistair Cooke: golf has always been popular among Calvinists because “’it is a method of self-torture, disguised as a game, which would entrap irreligious youth into the principles of what was to become known first as Calvinist, and then, through Calvinism, as ‘golf.’ The main tenets of this faith are that life is grim and uncomfortable and that human vanity cannot prevail. Man should expect very little here below and strive to get it. Other games can be faked, but golf cannot. To play golf with friends is to enter a worldwide secret society that revels in the mutual display of human frailty.’”
