“Sectarianism is the symptom of the ‘Protestant disease’ of reinventing Christianity to suit the circumstances. It is situational Christianity. Many Roman Catholics fear that the Protestant disease has made alarming headway in Rome since [Vatican II]. The church in the modern world they could perhaps take; it is the modern world in the church that’s so troubling to them . . . There is something bracing about belonging to a church that dares to be five hundred years out of step, but it is embarrassing to belong to a church that is worried about being five years out of step, and is huffing and puffing in its efforts to catch up.”
