The church in the modern world they could perhaps take; it is the modern world in the church that’s so troubling to them . . . There is something bracing about belonging to a church that dares to be five hundred years out of step, but it is embarrassing to belong to a church that is worried about being five years out of step, and is huffing and puffing in its efforts to catch up.”
