“As Peter in Acts puts it more cosmically: it was done by those under the law and those outside it. In a word, by everyone. Readers of the gospel are given to understand that they too would have had a hand in it had they been there. Jesus would fare as badly in Jacksonville, Jakarta, or Johannesburg as he did in Jerusalem. We are all standing there at Calvary with silver in our purses and hammers in our hands.”
